生物膜是一种典型的软凝聚态物质,它代表了一种稳定的由微生物细胞组成的复杂混合物的微生态系统,细胞镶嵌在胞外聚合物基质中,并且附着在固体表面。随着显微技术和微生物分析技术的不断发展,原子力显微镜、扫描电子显微镜、扫描激光显微镜以及微生物电极技术和微生物切片技术已广泛应用于生物膜形态和结构的研究,并取得了一些成果。

但就目前而言,生物膜仍还是一个“黑匣子"。生物膜内物质的转化、控制微生物群落的基本因素、生物膜增殖的最主要参数等许多问题还没有定论,因此,直接利用观测到的生物膜形态和结构上的知识来对生物膜反应进行分析及对生物膜反应器的设计、运行进行优化是不现实的。

生物膜模型常作为一种研究工具用来填补我们关于生物膜反应方面知识上的不足。通过必要的假设,构建出一系列的数学模型,直接利用这些生物膜模型,我们可以更好地了解生物膜的结构和种群动力学,评价特定微生物种群的行为特性,’阐明生物膜附着和解附的机理,研究生物膜中不同微生物群落的生态效应。在实际工程应用方面,生物膜模型可以作为一种模拟工具,用来描述底物降解和底物浓度、生物量等因素之间的关系,生物膜增长与底物浓度、生物量、增长常数等因素之间的关系,底物降解与生物膜增长、底物降解与环境因素等关系,进而用于评价试验或生产中观测到的与生物膜相关的现象,寻找对生物膜反应器实时控制的方法,最终实现对生物膜反应器设计、运行的优化。
